Preface

Modern developments in food production, processing, distribution and storage led to a complex food supply chain. The distance between the producer and end consumers increased due to the availability of rapid transportation and improved storage facilities. The complexity and length of the modern food supply chain greatly reduced its visibility raising new food safety issues and also affecting the integrity of halal food.

An understanding of the halal food supply chain within the context of the modern food industry and commerce is essential to develop sustainable halal food industries on solid principles. In recent years, books have been written about processed foods and their suitability for Muslim consumers. A number of halal food guides are also available on the internet and bookstores. According to my knowledge, there is no book available about the halal food supply chain covering all stages from farm to fork. This book is written to fill that gap and to promote discussion and basic understanding of issues pertaining to the halal food supply chain.

This book is primarily useful for religious scholars, food scientists, food technologists and academics. It is equally useful for the entire halal food industry as well as for consumers who wish to understand the position of halal food in present-day supply chain. The importance of the global halal food market and its future expansion are explained to highlight potential business opportunities for entrepreneurs.
